How To Control Tears In Public?

To cry in public is highly embarrassing. It demonstrates your weakness, cowardliness, inability, your intention to seek sympathy and so on. Even if you have a genuine reason, it is not comfortable to cry in public, unless you are at kinder garden, where you won’t feel bad about crying.

Walk away:

It is highly advisable, before you try any techniques to control your tears falling down your cheeks at a corporate meeting, to just walk away from the situation/place. You could just say “I’ll be back in a minute and just walk away”. It is the simplest possible solution, if not to control tears, will at least help you to hide it from public.

Do an instant divert:

Divert your mind at that instant when you voice wobbles and you are about to burst. Think of something interesting, funny, colorful and so on. Make your mind warm by thinking of something nice so that you don’t get caught in the misery.

Count numbers:

Counting numbers is a scientific solution. When you start counting numbers, preferably in the reverse order, the brain takes control of the rational side and there is no room for the emotional aspects to come in. This way you just can mask up your dirty emotion.

Drink water:

Taking a sip of water will help you to relax and will take that ‘something’ which blocks your throat when you try to control your tears. This technique is particularly helpful if you are in a meeting or a presentation and cannot use any of the above techniques. You just can’t walk away when you are defending your thesis, or can not be counting numbers and thinking of colors when your boss and colleagues are questioning you at the appraisal. So take a pause and sip some water.

Your face:

You can do some magic by controlling your facial muscles, without others knowing it. A stiff upper lip helps. You can let your jaws loose or pretend to yawn. You can keep your face straight and look up by just moving your eyes. These facial postures are incompatible with crying.

Don’t try to seek sympathy:

If you are crying to just seek sympathy, then this is a disease. You don’t have a healthy personality and if in due course people find out that you are crying in public to gain their sympathy, then this will seriously affect your self esteem in the society. So just get rid of this habit.

Be strong:

A strong person will never cry in public. Be prepared for the worst things to come. Don’t be startled by failures, rather anticipate them. Always have a plan B (or even C) to avoid running around like a headless chicken and losing your boldness at the time of a crisis.

Be determined:

Last but not the least, be determined not to cry. Tell your mind nothing can make you cry. Whatever be the situation that bombards you, your determination will keep you from crying.

I would suggest Karnataka Chief Minister to read this post of yours. He has this uncanny habit of shedding (crocodile) tears in public on public platforms!
